Mattel (MAT) has pulled a Barbie book from Amazon (AMZN) following allegations of sexism and misogyny in the book.

MattelBarbie I Can Be a Computer Engineer was published by Random House in 2010 and it has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews.

In the book, Barbie is developing an idea for a game but she admits that she can’t make the game without her sister Skipper. She tells him that she needs help from Steven and Brian to make her idea into a game.

The content of the book has been misinterpreted as sexist due to the fact that Barbie is portrayed as a helpless woman who needs help from her male friends to make the game. Mattel has pulled the book from Amazon and apologized for it.

“The portrayal of Barbie in this specific story doesn’t reflect the Brand’s vision for what Barbie stands for,” said Mattel on its Facebook page. “We believe girls should be empowered to understand that anything is possible and believe they live in a world without limits.”

MAT stock is down 0.7%. AMZN stock is up 0.5%.
