Apple reportedly bought the startup sometime last year. The company hasn’t disclosed how much the purchase cost. The purchase of Sementic went unannounced. However, in late 2014, a layer from the tech company was added to the startup’s board, reports TechCrunch.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plan,” an Apple spokesman told The Wall Street Journal.

Semetric is currently working with Spotify and Last.fm to provide data on music. However, it’s unknown if those partnerships will continue now that the startup is owned by Apple. When it comes to tracking music popularity, Semetric includes information from sales, streams, BitTorrent and other sources. It also checks for mentions of artists and songs on social media, TechCrunch notes.
