The hotel chain claimed that it wanted to block Wi-Fi to protect its guests from hot spots that could be used by hackers, reports Engadget.

When news spread that Marriott wanted to block personal Wi-Fi hot spots, people and companies rallied together against it. Some accused the hotel chain of wanting to force its guests to pay extra to use its high-speed internet, Engadget notes.

Marriott isn’t the only hotel chain interested in blocking personal Wi-Fi hot spots. A group of hotels came together to ask the FCC to allow them the right to block personal Wi-Fi for security purposes. The FCC hasn’t weighed in on the request yet, reports Cnet.
