5 Best Stocks Under $5 is a feature intended to pinpoint smaller stocks that have recently shown outstanding performance-and that, because of recent positive events, seem likely to continue to outperform going forward. Some may have been poor performers in recent months or years, but are showing improved price action and volume for the first time in quite awhile, and could very well be turnaround candidates.

Here’s a look at the small priced stocks with the best gains for this week:

Best Stocks Under $5: InfoSonics Corporation (IFON)

3/6/15 Closing Price: $2.54 (+48%)

InfoSonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IFON) is a manufacturer of wireless telecommunication products that sells to wireless carriers, retailers, and distributors. IFON stock was up big this week on higher volume after reporting fourth quarter EPS of 5 cents, up a penny from a year ago. Revenue came in at $17.9 million, which was a 50.4% increase from the $11.9 million reported last year for the same quarter.

There were no analyst estimates. InfoSonics recently introduced its first LTE model cell phone, and says that newer models will be launched in the near future.

Best Stocks Under $5: McDermott International (MDR)

3/6/15 Closing Price: $3.32 (+31%)

McDermott International (NYSE:MDR) designs and executes offshore oil and gas projects in the Pacific rim, the Americas, and the Middle East. MDR stock rose significantly this week after posting a fourth quarter profit of 3 cents per share, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a loss of 5 cents.

MDR also beat the estimate on the full year, reporting a loss of 32 cents against a loss of 48 cents. The Q4 revenue was $806.4 million, a 56% increase from a year ago and well ahead of the Zacks estimate of $752 million.

MDR also announced they have entered into a new project to develop North Field Alpha gas, off the coast of Qatar.

Best Stocks Under $5: Dot Hill Systems Corp (HILL)

3/6/15 Closing Price: $4.68 (+15%)

Dot Hill Systems Corp (NASDAQ:HILL) announced fourth quarter 2014 net income of 13 cents a share on $8.5 million, well ahead of analysts’ expectations, and up from a year ago’s 4 cents a share. Revenue this quarter was $217.5 million, and was the highest in six years. Looking ahead to first quarter, 2015, HILL expects to come in at 4 cents to 7 cents per share.

Dot Hill designs manufactures, and markets software and hardware storage systems. HILL stock is up about 50% since last October.

Best Stocks Under $5: Coronado Biosciences Inc (CNDO)

3/6/15 Closing Price: $3.28 (+16%)

Coronado Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CNDO) is a biopharmaceutical company that develops new immunotherapy drugs to treat autoimmune diseases such as Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, and multiple sclerosis, as well as cancer. CNDO had a breakout week after announcing the formation of Checkpoint Therapeutics, Inc., a subsidiary company, that will develop antibodies to work with the immune system to target cancer cells. Clinical trials will commence during the second half of 2015.

Earlier in the week, CNDO announced the closing of a private offering of a promissory note for $10 million, which the company intends to us to acquire medical technologies and products, and create new subsidiaries, such as Checkpoint.

Best Stocks Under $5: Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc (AST)

3/6/15 Closing Price: $4.72 (+18%)

Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc (NYSEMKT:AST) is another small biotech company, which develops products to treat diseases of th18e heart, nervous system, blood, and cancer.

This week AST announced that the Atlanta, Ga Sherpherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital for spinal cord and brain injuries, has begun enrollment for the Phase 1/2a clinical trial of AST_OPC1 for recently injured patients who have sensory and motor complete cervical spinal cord injury (SCI).

OPC1 (oligodendrocyte progenitor cells) are derived from human embryonic stem cells, and are said to have the potential to repair nerve cell functioning. They are being tried with patients who have no sensation or movement below their injury site, plus severe paralysis of the limbs, for whom no other restorative treatment has existed previously. The trials are still very experimental and therefore AST stock may remain quite volatile going forward.

Asterias also announced this week that they will release fourth quarter and full year 2014 operating results on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 after the closing bell.
