Facebook cited a lack of users on FriendFeed for the reason that it was closing down the service. According to the company, the number of users on the service have steadily declined since it was acquired back in 2009, reports Recode.

It was bought back in 2009 for $50 million and co-founder Bret Taylor became Facebook’s CTO. At the time, Facebook only had 250 million users. Now it has 1.4 billion users, Recode notes.

“Beginning today, we will no longer accept new signups,” FriendFeed said in a blog post. “You will be able to view your posts, messages, and photos until April 9th. On April 9th, we’ll be shutting down FriendFeed and it will no longer be available.”
