The majority of the lawsuits were from royalties patents for Wi-Fi and video in smartphones. Microsoft started the fight when it filed a lawsuit against Motorola, which was owned by Google at the time, and Motorola fired back with 16 patent infringement cases, reports Wall Street Observer.

The patent dispute between Google and Microsoft continued even after Motorola was sold to Lenovo. This was due to Google continuing to hold the rights to many of the patents. The two companies both denied any wrongdoing, but Google took a hit in 2013 when a judge ruled that it could only charge $1.8 million per year in royalty fees for some of its patents. Before this it was charging MSFT $4 billion per year, Wall Street Observer notes.

“Google and Microsoft have agreed to collaborate on certain patent matters and anticipate working together in other areas in the future to benefit our customers,” the two companies told Eyewitness News.
