According to Symantec’s security blog, this new iOS malware threat has been found in apps available for Apple devices in the United States. Previous versions of Xcode Ghost were discovered back in September and were limited to China.

This new version of Xcode Ghost is found in unofficial versions of Apple’s Xcode 7, which allows developers to create apps for iOS 9. Developers are supposed to download Xcode from Apple’s official website to avoid iOS malware, but some chose other sources for faster downloads of the 4GB tool.

The first instance of Xcode Ghost in China resulted in anywhere from three dozen to 300 apps being infected with the iOS malware. This was a drastic change from before, when only a total of five malicious apps had ever been found in the App Store.
