Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) has been ordered to pay $72 million to a family of a woman that died from ovarian cancer.

Johnson & Johnson, Talcum Powder, Cancer baby powder, Shower to Shower, JNJAccording to the ruling, Johnson & Johnson must pay $10 million in actual damages and $62 million in punitive damages due to the woman’s ovarian cancer, which was claimed to be caused by talcum powder in the company’s Shower to Shower product. JNJ will likely appeal the ruling, reports CBS News.

Evidence from the case included an internal memo from a medical consultant in 1997 that suggested anyone ignoring the effects of talcum powder wouldn’t be different from cigarette makers that claimed their products didn’t cause lung cancer. Johnson & Johnson is facing 1,200 other cases from women concerning talcum powder, CBS News notes.

“We have no higher responsibility than the health and safety of consumers and we are disappointed with the outcome of the trial,” Johnson & Johnson told The Washington Post. “We sympathize with the plaintiff’s family but firmly believe the safety the cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence.”
