An independent laboratory studied examined the ingredients of product by companies like Walmart’s Great Value (NYSE:WMT), Jewel-Osco’s Essential EverydayKraft (NASDAQ:KHZ), which sell parmesan cheese with 7.8% cellulose, 8.8% cellulose and 3.8% cellulose respectively.

The food additive cellulose is made from wood pulp, which is used to make paper, as well as to thicken and stabilize processed foods. Basically, wood pulp is added to give plant food texture.

The wood pulp is extracted and group like powder that doesn’t dissolve in water or taste like anything. Using cellulose in cheese products prevents the cheese from sticking together and getting oily.

Other companies that sell parmesan cheese with traces of cellulose include Whole Foods’s 365 brand (NASDAQ:WFM) and Target’s Market Pantry (NYSE:TGT).

WMT stock is up 0.35% Wednesday. KHC stock is up 2.67%, WFM stock is up 2.78% and TGT stock is up 0.84%.
