U.S. stocks eked out small gains as commodities prices declined and emerging markets equities fell. Oil prices slid after traders learned wildfires in Canada were not as bad as previously expected. Emerging markets benchmarks lost ground on news Brazil had to annul impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff due to some minor errors.

The Nasdaq Composite posted one of its better days in recent weeks with a gain of a third of a percent.

Those gains were modest, but the real excitement came by way of Allergan plc (NYSE:AGN), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (NYSE:KKD) and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:TEVA), which were easily three of today’s best stocks.

Allergan plc (AGN)

Pharmaceuticals maker Allergan rose 6.1% after the company revealed positive trial results for one of its treatments of ulipristal acetate in women with uterine fibroids.

AGN and Gedeon Richter Plc. said a Phase III trial of Venus I showed topline results. AGN expects a trial of Venus II to be completed later this year with topline results expected in the first half of 2017.

“The study included 157 patients, with 101 patients randomized to ulipristal acetate 5 and 10 mg and 56 to placebo. The study met all the co-primary and secondary endpoints with both ulipristal treatment arms achieving statistically significant results over placebo,” according to a statement issued by AGN.

AGN added that the Venus I trial is the first of its kind in the U.S.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD)

Shares of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts surged 24.3% on about 20 times the average daily volume after Luxembourg’s JAB Holding Co agreed to acquire KKD for $1.35 billion. JAB’s purchase of KKD bolsters an already growing global coffee foot print.

Before moving on KKD, JAB bought “the Caribou Coffee and Peet’s Coffee & Tea chains in the United States,” reports Reuters. North Carolina-based KKD will continue operating independently following the JAB acquisition.

JAB’s offer for KKD equals $21 per share.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (TEVA)

Generic drugs giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries climbed over 5% on above-average volume after the Israeli company reported an adjusted first-quarter profit of $1.36 a shares. Analysts expected TEVA to earn $1.17 per share.

TEVA’s sales fell 17% to $2.2 billion.

Worldwide, revenues of TEVA’s “multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone outperformed, with $1 billion in sales for the quarter, a 9 percent increase compared to a year ago,” according to CNBC.
