Hyperloop One is planning to launch its first major test today in the Las Vegas desert.

Hyperloop One, Elon Musk

The new test will have a 10-foot long sled travelling 116 mph down a track for about two seconds. The sled will crash into sand bags due to there not yet being a braking system. Hyperloop One wants a fully-functional hyperloop running by 2020.

The idea behind the hyperloop, a pod traversing a tube in a vacuum, was first envisioned by Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk. The idea has the pods travelling at 760 mph, but it’s currently very expensive to make. The goal is to reduce costs below that of high-speed rail systems, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Another company, Hyperloop Transportation Techniques, is also working on its own transport using the system envisioned by Musk. It plans to have a five-mile test track ready for use in 2018.
