Morley Safer Retiring From ’60 Minutes’

Morley Safer is retiring from CBS Corporation’s (CBS60 Minutes after 56 years with the show.

handled a total of 919 reports while on 60 Minutes and has been with the new show for all but two of its seasons. He joined back in 1970, but started reducing his number of appearances after reaching 80 years of age. He is currently 84 years old.

Morley Safer said that he didn’t enjoy being on television because it didn’t feel right to talk to a machine. However, he said it paid very well. A special hour-long show on Sunday titled Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life will look over his career, reports The New York Times.

“It’s been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air,” Morley Safer told Us Weekly.”But most of all I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast.”
