Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) just brought Wimbledon to its social network with a little help from Walt Disney Co‘s (NYSE:DIS) ESPN feed, giving us our first real glimpse of what its full-blown NFL streaming will look like in the fall.

TWTR Stock: Twitter Inc Live Sports Debuts With WimbledonEarlier in the year, Twitter paid $10 million for exclusive streaming rights of certain Thursday Night NFL games. The deal, Twitter hopes, will boost user growth and provide an instantly appealing service for new users.

But just how it will stop the bleeding at Twitter isn’t as clear as its Wimbledon live stream.

The company had this to say to Recode:

“Twitter is increasingly a place where people can find live streaming video, and that includes exciting sporting events like Wimbledon. This livestream is an extremely early and incomplete test experience, and we’ll be making lots of improvements before we launch it in its final form.”

In theory, the streams should provide TWTR a shot in the arm for advertising revenue. Said ads, however, are missing from Wednesday’s Wimbledon trial run.

And while we know how much Twitter paid for the rights to stream NFL games, Twitter did not provide any details about the Wimbledon deal’s terms.

Good Things to Come for TWTR Stock?

But we can see what its NFL games may look like come fall, with a fixed feed streaming high-quality video (only stuttering a few times) and an ever-updating stream of tweets populating on the right. The commentators, too, play to Twitter’s audience, showing screenshots of tweets on their laptops.

Still, as of now, there just isn’t a whole lot of data to go off of to glean the material impact for TWTR stock. What we do know is that TWTR is talking to broadcast and cable partners as well as professional sports leagues.

While the stream looks crisp, it’s worth wondering just how many people will take to Twitter to watch live sports rather than just watch them on their ESPN account or on their TV as usual.

As of this writing, John Kilhefner did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
