Facebook Lifestage (NASDAQ:FB) is the latest creation by the social media site, aimed at teenagers.

The new app will not be as packed with information and statuses as Facebook and its News Feed, and it has certain exclusivity features that are reminiscent of the network’s beginnings.

Here are five things to know about it:

  • Only adolescents can access Facebook Lifestage, specifically users between the ages of 13 and 19, which make up about 8% of all Facebook users. Many teenagers find Facebook to be uncool because their parents can view what they’re doing on the site.
  • The idea is a throwback to the social media site’s beginnings in 2004, where you could only connect to other users if you went to the same school as them. This exclusivity factor is appealing to teenagers who can now connect digitally with their classmates, and it will focus on video and each user’s interests, making it a simpler version of Facebook.
  • School members can view each other’s profiles once the school reaches 20 members. There are no strict privacy options, and many are criticizing this aspect of it. There is also the possibility that users will not be real students that go to the school, so there are concerns regarding fake profiles.
  • The app is only for iOS and it has a 2.5-star rating on the iTunes Store.
  • The company hopes that Lifestage members will become Facebook users once they turn 20.

The social media site recently teamed up with Unity to offer a gaming platform that allows developers to publish their games.

FB stock is up 0.5% Monday.
