Actor Steven Hill passed away at age 94 Tuesday.

He died at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, his wife confirmed. He suffered from multiple ailments but the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

Here are nine things to remember him by:

  • He was a Seattle, Washington native, descending from Russian immigrants. He moved to New York City to kickstart his acting career
  • Perhaps his best-known role is Law & Order, where he spent 10 years playing District Attorney Adam Schiff from 1990 to 2000.
  • Hill served four years in the United States Naval Reserve.
  • The actor’s film career didn’t start until the 1950s, but he did make his mark in Broadway in 1946, starring Ben Hecht’s A Flag Is Born, alongside Marlon Brando.
  • His film debut came in A Lady Without a Passport, co-starring Hedy Lamarr.
  • The Washington-native became an action hero in 1966’s Mission Impossible, where he played the leader of the Impossible Missions Force.
  • He married twice, having four children with her first wife Selma Stern, and another five children with Rachel. His second marriage was only a year away from its 50th anniversary before his death.
  • He was an Orthodox Jew and he took the tenets of the religion very seriously, opting not to work during the Sabbath–sundown Friday to dusk Saturday.
  • His extensive TV career includes roles in The UntouchablesRawhide and The Fugitive. His film career includes Rich and Famous and Yentl.
