The iconic Carnegie Deli located in NYC is closing this year.

Carnegie Deli is closing due to owner and president Marian Harper being unable to keep up with the stress of running a restaurant in NYC. The brand will go on to become one that will be sold wholesale. It will also still operate its other locations across the United States.

The Carnegie Deli location at 854 Seventh Avenue will continue to operate until Dec. 31, 2016, but after that it will close. The store was first opened in 1937. It was obtained by the Harper family in 1976 when Marian Harper’s father bought it from the original owners.

“At this stage of my life, the early morning to late night days have taken a toll, along with my sleepless nights and grueling hours that come with operating a restaurant business in Manhattan,” Harper told CBS News. “I’m very sad to close Carnegie Deli New York at 854 7th Avenue, but I’ve reached a time in my life when I need to take a step back.”

Employees at the NYC Carnegie Deli location were told about the closing on Friday. The owner said she chose to keep the restaurant open through the holiday season so that employees could make extra money off of tips.

While the Carnegie Deli closing may come as a shock for some, it is possible that the restaurant will reopen. Licensing deals are keeping the other locations across the United States open and the owner hopes this will some day be the case with the NYC location, reports WABC-TV.
