Today is Labor Day 2016 and investors around the nation are wondering the same thing–is the stock market open today?

Labor Day 2016

Much like every other federal holiday, there will be no trading today, September 5 due to the holiday. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September every year, and due to the fact that it is national holiday, the stock market is closed throughout the day.

Trading activity will resume tomorrow on a regular schedule following today’s break. The most recent federal holiday that saw the stock market close nationwide was Independence Day.

The next holiday that will see investors take a break from the stock market is Thanksgiving Day, which will take place on November 24 this year. Other holidays that pause trading throughout the year, include Christmas, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday and Memorial Day.

Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894, following the death of several workers during the Pullman Strike at the hand of members of the U.S. Army, as well as other members of the military.

Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a public holiday in 1887, and the rest of the nation followed suit seven years later. 30 states had already adopted the holiday by then.

Today is the last day when it is acceptable to wear white as it marks the unofficial end of summer.
