Obamacare

Online health insurance exchanges covering all 50 states were unable to process enrollments on Sunday after a third party data center suffered technical difficulties[2].

The latest glitches comes after a very rocky start for the health exchange websites that are the centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Sunday’s failure was linked to an outage at Verizon’s (VZ[3]) Terremark data center, which cut the center off from the federal government’s data network. With the loss of connectivity, the websites could not verify the identifies of people trying to purchase insurance through the exchanges, Reuters notes.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on Monday that attempts to resolve the problem were ongoing, but that no timetable for a restoration of service was available.

A seemingly endless series of technical problems have plagued the online exchanges[4] since they launched on Oct. 1. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will appear before congress this week.

She is expected to field hostile questions from Republicans who hope to use the problems to discredit Obamacare[5]. Many Democrats have expressed growing frustration with the website problems.
