The move to create the new holiday comes in the form of a petition on the White House’s website. The petition says that by making Opening Day a national holiday, the government will allow Americans to “exercise their inalienable right” to watch the start of the baseball season, Politico notes.
To promote the petition, Budweiser has partnered with Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. The former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop will appear in online ads from Budweiser promoting the petition.
Not surprisingly, the MLB is smiling on the effort. The St. Louis Post Dispatch quoted an MLB official saying that the league was “pleased” with the campaign by Budweiser.
Petitions on the White House website need to garner at least 100,000 signatures to receive consideration by the Obama administration. The MLB Opening Day holiday petition had managed to draw just over 2,700 by Tuesday morning, but with Budweiser planning an ad campaign to promote the idea, that is likely to climb.
The petition must obtain the required number of signatures by Mar. 26, in order to be considered. The MLB’s Opening Day falls on Mar. 31 this year. You can see the petition by visiting WhiteHouse.gov.
The federal government is not required to actually act on any petition, no matter how many votes it gets.
Shares of BUD fell about 1% in Tuesday morning trading, but the stock still remains up 12% year-to-date.
