Well, it took less than a month for the whispers and suggestions for the 2016 presidential election to begin.
With Barack Obama ineligible to run for a third term, both parties will be fielding non-incumbent candidates, opening up the race for president. While many would say it is too soon to look to 2016 when Obama hasn’t even been inaugurated for his second term yet, well, people are already starting the chatter.
Who’s being talked up now? None other than former Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush. What’s prompting the (extremely) premature talk? Bush was in Washington, D.C. today giving a speech to the Fifth Annual National Summit on Education Reform.
In the speech, he criticized the United States’ educational system, calling on the U.S. to adopt global benchmarks for education and to reward good teachers instead of increasing teacher pay based on seniority.
What made people wag their tongues about Bush as a presidential candidate was the fact he met with former staffers in D.C., renting a conference room and inviting the man in charge of Mitt Romney’s polling company to the meeting. This prompted the Drudge Report to run a headline on their website titled “Bush III.”
Bush tried to brush aside talk of 2016 during his visit to D.C., insisting he was there for education reform and education reform alone. At this point, it is way to soon to say whether or not Bush will follow in the footsteps of his brother George W. and father George H.W. It’s probably not a good idea to bet against him running, at any rate.
