Congressional frustration over the burgeoning scandal at the Internal Revenue Service bubbled over on one Sunday talk show.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union program, hosted by Candy Crowley, California Representative Darrell Issa called White House Press Secretary Jay Carney a “paid liar” and alleged that Carney was “making up things about what happened.” Issa said his comments pertained to Carney’s attempt to shift blame for the scandal to the IRS’s Cincinnati office, the Washington Post noted.
The IRS has come under heavy criticism since it emerged last month that the agency had deliberately targeted conservative and “Tea Party” groups for extra scrutiny. Since the scandal broke, IRS officials in Cincinnati and Washington D.C. have been tied to the targeting of conservatives.
The White House has been hit with a barrage of scandals in recent week’s, including continuing fallout from the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, last year, and revelations that the Department of Justice obtained telephone records for journalists as part of a leak investigation.
