The U.S. Senate passed the unemployment extension, which affects 1.3 million Americans, with a vote of 60 to 37. The Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) has been the subject of debate between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats wanted to extend the EUC, but Republicans argued agasint extending a program that cost $25 billion a year, reports the Detroit Free Press.

“Extending unemployment benefits will provide relief for now, but this is just another short-term fix,” Terri Lynn Land, who may be the Democratic party’s nominee for U.S. Senate, told the Detroit Free Press. Read 

Bloomberg Gives $2.5M to Help Democrats Keep Senate

Michael Bloomberg may be out of office in New York, but he’s not giving up on politics.

The former mayor announced yesterday that he is giving $2.5 million to a super PAC dedicated to keeping the U.S. Senate in Democratic hands.

Bloomberg’s money went to Senate Majority PAC. The group is currently focusing on the 2014 midterm elections, in which 35 Senate seats are up for grabs. Of those seats, 21 are currently held by Democrats. Read 

Group Unveils Proposed Satan Statue Design for Oklahoma State Capitol

A New York-based satanic group has revealed the design for a Satan statue that it wants placed at the Oklahoma State Capitol. Source:

The image shows Satan as an anthropomorphic goat with wings and a long beard. The proposed Satan statue also has the figure sitting on a pentagram throne and being surrounded by smiling children. Lucien Greaves, the spokesman for the satanic group, admits that the Satan statue is being proposed to show the hypocrisy of the Oklahoma State Capitol allowing a statue of the 10 Commandments, but says that his group will move forward with plans for the statue, reports Christian Science Monitor.

“You don’t walk around and see too many satanic temples around, but when you open the door to public spaces for us, that’s when you’re going to see us,” Greaves told WebProNews. Read 

Marijuana Is Legal In Colorado, But Landlords Are Banning It

Marijuana smokers who own their own homes won’t face a problem.  But those who rent could find themselves on the wrong side of their landlords, even though marijuana is legal in Colorado, NBCNews notes.

An attorney for the Apartment Association of Colorado says that now that marijuana is legal in Colorado, his group is fielding inquiries from landlords about their rights regarding marijuana smokers. Whether or not a landlord can forbid a renter from smoking pot now that marijuana is legal in Colorado depends on the language in the lease. Read

The US Senate confirmed Janet Yellen as the first female Federal Reserve chair, replacing outgoing head of America’s central bank Ben Bernanke.

Her tenure begins Feb. 1 — and for some marks a formal change in US banking policy as the Fed slowly eases back on it controversial lending practices it used to help move the country out of its financial crisis.

The Fed had been previously criticized by some politicians as it poured an estimated $3.8 trillion into the US economy following the financial crash. Read 

Liz Cheney Dropping Out of Wyoming Senate Race

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney made the decision due to unspecified health troubles in her family. With Liz Cheney out of the running, three-term Republican incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi will not have to run against another Republican. While some Republicans are relieved with the move, many are upset over Cheney’s decision because of her position against Obama.

Mr. Enzi considers himself a conservative but he hasn’t been as firm with opposing Democrats as Liz Cheney claimed she’d be. Conservative commentators such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity had backed Cheney up in the Wyoming Senate race before she dropped out. Read
