This year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival will feature a particularly controversial speaker.
Edward Snowden, the American security contractor who leaked documents showing massive spying operations by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), will address the SXSW meeting on Monday. Since Edward Snowden is considered a wanted fugitive by U.S. authorities and remains in Russia, which has granted him asylum, he will speak by teleconference, CNN notes.
During the conference, Edward Snowden will discuss government spying with a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Last year, Edward Snowden caused an international uproar after he fled the U.S. and released top secret U.S. documents showing NSA surveillance against American citizens and foreign leaders.
Edward Snowden has been alternately portrayed as a heroic whistleblower who exposed excessive government surveillance and as a traitor who revealed U.S. secrets. He faces arrest and trial in the U.S. if he leaves Russia.
