Former Congressman Weiner Rejoins Twitter

NewLetters Former Congressman Weiner Rejoins Twitter[1]Slowly but surely, former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., has been rejoining public life.

He was recently profiled[2], along with his wife Huma Abedin, in New York Times Magazine. He has reactivated his campaign web site[3]. He updated an online policy book[4] he created. And he gave an interview[5] to New York television station NY1.

What’s Weiner’s latest step in his return to the spotlight? He has returned to the social network[6] that led to his resignation as a Congressman: Twitter.

However, Weiner is not going back to his old Twitter handle, @repweiner[7], which has largely stayed silent since the 2011 sexting scandal that forced him to resign. Instead, he created a new account, @anthonyweiner[8]. He posted his new name on the @repweiner account to redirect followers, and has posted a couple of links to specific pages of his online policy book on @anthonyweiner.

Weiner’s ultimate goal appears to be the same as the one he held in 2011, before his political career was derailed: he wants to run for mayor of New York City. It remains to be seen whether or not the city’s residents are forgiving enough to vote him into office, but he appears to be picking up some momentum on Twitter. As of this writing, he has over 5,000 followers on his new account.
