Former President George W. Bush has kept a low profile since leaving office in 2009, and don’t expect him to jump back into the spotlight any time soon.
The latest proof that Bush wants to stay low key? He has declined an invitation from the Republican National Convention to attend. Bush made the announcement through an e-mail sent by his spokesman.
When asked if Bush had been invited to speak at the convention as well as attend, the spokesman said that Bush had declined before any speaking details had been discussed.
By declining to attend, Bush has put party ahead of whatever he might have had to gain personally by speaking at the convention. Mitt Romney doesn’t have to make the difficult decision on whether or not to let Bush speak. Former presidents who attend conventions typically address the convention, but the Republican Party knew that if Bush spoke, Barack Obama would tie Romney to Bush, whose presidency has been viewed unfavorably by many.
Also declining to attend the convention is Bush’s father, George H. W. Bush, due to health concerns. However, there will almost certainly be a Bush speaking at the convention, if not one of the two Bushs who served as president. Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida from 1999-2007 and possible vice presidential candidate, will likely speak even if he is not selected as Romney’s running mate. As a popular figure from one of the most crucial swing states, he will be an important figure this election cycle, and it would make sense for the GOP to give him a moment in the spotlight.
