Hillary Clinton Super PAC Raises $1.2 Million

NewLetters Hillary Clinton Super PAC Raises $1.2 Million[1]A super PAC aiming to elect Hillary Clinton president in 2016 has jumped out to a hefty head start over other potential candidates.

The Clinton-supporting group, Ready For Hillary, has already raised $1.2 million[2] since its founding in late January.

And while that is a drop in the bucket compared to what was spent by Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, and the various groups supporting them in the 2012 election (nearly $2 billion all together[3]), it’s still significant.

Why? Because we are still more than three years away from the 2016 election. The fact that Clinton supporters were able to drum up $1.2 million in six months this far away from the election shows that the Democratic presidential nomination is hers to lose. That is, of course, if she chooses to run.

Clinton has not indicated whether or not she will run, only indicating that she intended to take a rest out of the spotlight [4]after decades of political service as President Bill Clinton’s First Lady, a U.S. Senator from New York, and Secretary of State[5]. Her age — if elected, she would take office at age 69, one year younger than Reagan — and her level of energy are two things that might hold her back.

Still, many political supporters believe in her enough to give money in her support well in advance of the election. Some of the top donors to the super PAC include Acorn International (NYSE:ATV[6]) co-founder and board chairman Robert Roche ($25,000), investment writer and Democratic National Committee Treasurer Andrew Tobias ($5,000), and the wife of grocery store chain Giant Eagle’s executive chairman, Cynthia Shapira ($25,000).

More than 75% of the donations have come from donors giving $25 or less, echoing a fundraising strategy that was successful for Obama in 2008 and 2012.

It appears that if Hillary Clinton does decide to run for president in 2016, she will hit the ground sprinting.
