King Juan Carlos will be replaced by his son

   

King Juan Carlos, who has ruled for 39 years, is stepping down from the Spanish throne.

He married Princess Sofia of Greece in Athens on May 14, 1962. The couple have three children: Elena, Cristina and Felipe, reports Fox News Latino.

During his time as King, Carlos helped the country with the transition to democracy. He has also helped improve Spain’s relation with Latin America. Carlos will give up the throne to Crown Prince Felipe, Fox News Latino notes.

King Juan Carlos said that his son is ready to take over and that he will “open a new era of hope.” Plans to step down from the throne were being made by Carlos after he turned 76 in January, reports Businessweek.
