The First Lady is expanding her campaign to persuade Americans to eat better.
After years of promoting vegetables and a balanced diet — along with exercise, of course — Michelle Obama is touting a new item she says Americans should increase their consumption of: water. The first lady kicked off her new “Drink Up” campaign on Thursday in collaboration with the Partnership for a Healthier America, the Associated Press notes.
Consuming just one additional glass of water per day can “make a real difference for your health,” Obama said in a statement. The first lady will appear in a number of video messages that will run on popular TV talk shows promoting more water consumption.
The new campaign comes at a time when sales of bottled water are rising and traditional sugary-soda sales are down. That should be welcome news to health advocates who have attributed increased obesity rates among Americans to the consumption of drinks with a high fructose content.
Still, the head of one anti-obesity group noted that around a quarter of people under the age of 19 fail to consume even a single glass of water on most days. And 40% of people overall don’t consume more than half of the eight cups of water that health experts say they should drink each day.
The new “Drink Up” campaign will eventually place its logo on a wide variety of bottled waters.
