On Monday, Michael Grimm, a Republican congressman from New York, surrendered to FBI agents as federal prosecutors unsealed a 20-count indictment against him.
Michael Grimm, who represents New York’s Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, is expected to be arraigned later in the day on conspiracy, obstruction, mail fraud and perjury charges at a federal court in Brooklyn. Prosecutors accuse Michael Grimm of hiding more than $1 million in gross receipts at his Healthalicious restaurant from federal and state taxes, USA TODAY notes.
A former FBI agent, Michael Grimm was denounced by George Venizelos, the FBI’s New York field office assistant director, who said, “He cheated, evaded and then lied.”
Michael Grimm is also facing allegations that followers of an Israeli rabbi made illicit contributions to his campaign. In January, Michael Grimm was caught on camera making threats to a reporter who asked him about the federal probe.
Last week, anticipating today’s indictments, Michael Grimm’s attorney complained that the politician was facing “a politically driven vendetta” by federal prosecutors and predicted that his client would be vindicated.
