David Axelrod is putting his money where his mouth is. Or his mustache, at least.
In an appearance today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Axelrod, a senior adviser with Barack Obama’s campaign, bet the show’s host Joe Scarborough that Obama would win Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. If Obama fails to win all three states, Axelrod said he would shave his mustache “of 40 years.”
Axelrod then challenged Scarborough to grow a mustache if Obama won any of those three states, but the TV host declined. Scarborough then made a counter-offer : if Obama won either North Carolina or Florida, he would grow a mustache. Axelrod accepted this offer.
The wager comes in the wake of the Romney campaign’s claims that those three states, which have been consistently Democratic in recent elections, are now in play. The polls right now, though, show Obama with a lead in all three of the states in Axelrod’s bet. So for now, Axelrod’s ‘stache seems safe.
There’s a decent chance that Scarborough may wind up having to grow some facial hair, though. While North Carolina looks to be safely in the Romney column, Florida is still a toss-up, with Obama holding a narrow 1% lead.
At least if Scarborough loses his part of the bet, he will be just in time to grow a mustache for Movember.
