A new advertising campaign being run by President Barack Obama in the key swing states of New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Colorado promotes what the president calls a “new economic patriotism.”
According to the two-minute ad running in these states, Obama’s economic plan would create 1 million new manufacturing jobs, reduce oil imports, and hire thousands of new teachers.
Mitt Romney’s campaign has responded by releasing an ad aimed at coal miners, including video from 2008 where Obama supported forcing greenhouse gas emitters to buy allowances at auction, saying “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them.”
Republican-leaning super PACs and political groups have also jumped into the advertising fray. Americans for Job Security launched an $8.7 million advertising campaign in six swing states, while the newly-created Ending Spending Action Fund is set to launch a $10 million, four-state ad buy today.
This new onslaught of advertising comes as Obama appears to be widening his lead in several key states, spurred in part by Romney’s comments about “victims” who would support Obama no matter what. Obama’s campaign is trying to keep their eyes on the prize, while Romney’s has pointed out that some national polls still have him in a statistical tie with Obama.
