obama Obama Unveils $100 Million Project to Map the Brain[1]President Obama has announced a $100 million initiative to map the human brain.

The project — which the president says will be in his 2014 budget — aims to help researchers fight neurological diseases, USA TODAY reports[2].

In his announcement, the president said the research could help doctors better understand and treat a host of brain disorders such as autism, Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy. The project is expected to take up to 10 years to complete.

The president described the program as being the type of government initiative that can create jobs. By funding the project, research jobs are created that can lead to more and better health care positions in the future.

Still, the $100 million project is threatened by the ongoing budget battles in Congress. The president said money for federal research is subject to the ongoing sequestration.

In response, a spokesman for Speaker John Boehner said the research is exciting and and important. He encouraged the president to “reprioritize existing research funding into these areas.”
