Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., revealed during an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that his oncologist was not covered under his insurance through Obamacare.
When asked about his health, Coburn said, “Fortunately — even though my new coverage won’t cover my specialist — I’m going to have great care, and I have a great prognosis.”
Coburn’s spokesman confirmed that the insurance he enrolled with through the Affordable Health Care exchange reduced his coverage and eliminated coverage for his cancer specialist. The senator will continue to see his oncologist and pay out of pocket.
In November, Coburn revealed that his prostate cancer had recurred, and he has also survived colon cancer and melanoma. Earlier this month, he announced he would not be serving out the remainder of his second term, stepping down at the end of 2014. He said his decision to do so was not related to health issues.
On Monday, Coburn, along with Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, revealed a Senate bill that would replace the Affordable Care Act. It would eliminate the insurance mandate as well as requirements that insurance provide minimum benefits and employers offer insurance to employees. It would also eliminate most of the taxes funding Obamacare.
Coburn’s spokesman pointed out that the senator’s experience with losing coverage for his doctor exposed one of the flaws of the new health care system. “As Dr. Coburn’s experience shows, the American people are about to learn they’re going to lose access to not only their doctors and plans, but their specialists and treatments.”
