Today’s vote on getting rid of what’s commonly known as Obamacare passed the House by a 229-195 margin. Every Republican in the House voted in favor of the repeal, with just two Democrats crossing the aisle to support it.
Of course, much like the 36 other attempts by the House to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, this one is going nowhere. The Democrats still control the Senate, and there’s no way they’re going to pass it this time.
What this vote does provide House Republicans is the opportunity to go on record with their opposition — yet again. While speaking with reporters today, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Oh., said, “Republicans will continue to work to scrap the law in its entirety so we can focus on patient-centered reforms that lower cost and protect jobs, because jobs is what this is all about.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., both supported Obamacare and criticized the vote on an issue assured to go nowhere in the Senate in remarks to reporters Thursday. “Not only is this a clear waste of time and of taxpayer dollars, it’s a deliberate vote to eliminate the affordable quality health and care benefits millions of Americans are already enjoying,” she said.
While national efforts have made little headway in removing the Republican-hated legislation, state-level GOP resistance has born more fruit. Next year, millions of Americans in Republican-controlled states will not have health coverage because their governors and legislatures have refused to expand Medicare. The Obama administration has also been struggling to find funding for implementing various aspects of Obamacare, since congressional Republicans have refused to appropriate money to pay for the legislation’s implementation.
