House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had some harsh words for Republicans yesterday. She said that the GOP, in its attempts to cut government spending, was becoming “the E. Coli Club.”
Pelosi made the remarks after an appearance at a Boca Raton, Fla. retirement community. Her visit was in support of congressional candidate Lois Frankel, as well as an attempt to show Democrats are the biggest supporters of Medicare and Social Security.
In attacking Mitt Romney’s and House Republicans’ plans to shift Medicare from its current fee-for-service model to one where future retirees buy insurance with subsidies, Pelosi eventually broadened her attack. She said that attempts to trim government were misguided, but federal oversight of water, health, and food were important.
“This is the E. coli club,” she said, suggesting that a lack of regulation would have a negative impact on Americans.
In addition to attacking Republicans on government oversight, Pelosi defended Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been assailed by Republicans for claiming that a Bain Capital investor told him Romney had not paid taxes for 10 years. She joined the chorus of Democrats calling on Romney to release more of his tax returns and disprove the rumors.
She also said it was unlikely that a gun control bill would be passed despite two recent mass shootings in Aurora, Col. and Oak Creek, Wisc., and that her focus was on regaining a Democratic majority in the House.
