In what was almost certainly his final speech before Congress, Rep. and former presidential candidate Ron Paul, R-Tex., pulled no punches in assessing the political landscape over the 23 years he served in Congress.
Paul’s career in Congress began in 1976 and ran over the course of three periods: 1976-1977, 1979-1985, and 1997-present. He will be leaving office next year, after deciding not to seek another term in order to focus on running for President this year.
In his farewell address today, Paul spent 52 minutes critiquing the federal government, politicians, and special interests. He also criticized the size and complexity of the U.S. government and bureaucracy.
His speech could easily be summarized by one sentence within it: “Our Constitution, which was intended to limit government power and abuse, has failed.”
He noted that despite his efforts to limit the size and scope of government, that he had been mostly unsuccessful in that task.
“In spite of my efforts, the government has grown exponentially, taxes remain excessive, and the prolific increase of incomprehensible regulations continues. Wars are constant and pursued without Congressional declaration, deficits rise to the sky, poverty is rampant and dependency on the federal government is now worse than any time in our history.”
His solution for “achieving peace and prosperity” is deceptively simple: “pursue the cause of liberty.” He also urged an end to envy and intolerance, which he said hindered U.S. society.
