While President Barack Obama’s new health care program struggles with GOP opposition and glitchy websites, it’s appears to be getting support from one group of potential subscribers: sex workers.
At a registration drive in San Francisco last week, almost 40 sex workers of both genders filed the necessary documents to enroll in the program. The event was called the “Healthy Ho’s Party,” CNN notes.
Escorts, prostitutes and exotic performers are usually considered self-employed. As such, they often cannot afford the high cost of private health insurance. At least some sex workers will see monthly health insurance premiums fall below $200 under Obamacare, thanks to federal subsidies, putting coverage within their means.
The online health insurance exchanges that are the most visible part of the Affordable Care Act have faced a rocky start, plagued by overwhelmed servers and questionable numbers of actual enrollments.
Much of the blame for the faulty launch has fallen on Health and Human Services Secretary Katherine Sebelius, whose resignation has been demanded by many Republicans.
