Chris Christie is getting support from a basketball superstar in his bid for a second term as governor of the Garden State.
Former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal is lending his public endorsement to the Republican in a new advertisement. In the TV spot, O’Neal says that he has partnered with Christie to “bring jobs back to our cities, and on a new program to help kids in tough neighborhoods get ahead.” O’Neal acknowledges that he hasn’t endorsed many political candidates, but says that Christie is “a great man” who has increased school funding and provided merit pay for good teachers, CBS News notes.
The 7-foot-tall basketball star is a native of Newark, New Jersey’s largest city. He endorsed Democrat Barack Obama’s re-election last year.
Recent polls in New Jersey suggest that Christie is well ahead of his Democrat challenger and is likely to win re-election easily.
In May, reports indicated that Christie had undergone weight-loss surgery at the urging of his family.
