Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, held a wedding for a couple that couldn’t get married due to the government shutdown.
The couple had planned to get married at the Jefferson Memorial on Saturday, but learned that it was off-limits due to the government shutdown. Colbert offered to marry the couple on his show. He did so on Thursday, showing off his certificate from the American Marriage Ministries to viewers. The wedding started with Colbert reminding everyone that he would take over services that the government couldn’t handle during the shutdown, which includes weddings. Mike Cassesso, the groomsman, was brought out and a round of shots was taken to celebrate. Then the best man, which was Smokey the Bear, came out. After this the bridesmaids came out and everyone took another shot. Finally Colbert tracked down MaiLien Le, the bride, and after a couple of shots they she entered the stage. She carried the Emmy that the show had recently won as her bouquet, reports NBC News.
