The retailer signed its name in a court brief that backs marriage equality. Target is following in the footsteps of other major companies that have signed the document and openly expressed their support for gay marriage including Apple (AAPL) and Starbucks (SBUX).
“It is our belief that everyone should be treated equally under the law, and that includes rights we believe individuals should have related to marriage,” Target Executive Vice President of Human Resources Jodee Kozlak said.
The company has taken criticism in the past for supporting an opponent of same-sex unions. Gay-rights activists considered boycotting Target but it appears as if the retailer is now looking to make amends.
TGT stock is down about 0.6% Thursday afternoon.
