President Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey.
The announcement was made on Tuesday and a statement from the White House confirms the action. The statement claims that President Trump chose to fire James Comey on the recommendations of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“The FBI is one of our Nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” President Trump said during the statement for James Comey’s firing.
The White House has also announced that a search for the next Director of the FBI will begin immediately. President Trump also said on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) that James Comey will be replaced with someone “who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI.”
Democrats have been vocal about the firing of James Comey. They point out that he was leading an investigation into possible connections between President Trump’s allies and Russia. Democrats have gone so far as to compare the firing to those that took place during the Watergate scandal during President Richard Nixon’s time leading the United States.
President Trump also responded to the criticism of his decision to fire James Comey. He said that the FBI Director has lost the confidence of both Democrats and Republicans. The President also claims that Democrats will be thanking him for firing Comey once everything has calmed down.
