IBM’s (NYSE:IBM) super-brainy computer Watson, is now performing medical duties, with a focus on oncology. He’ll be working at the prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Watson can understand natural English and also process about 1 million books per second. With this enormous power, he was able to beat two of the all-time top players on Jeopardy!
But Watson has proven to be more than just a cool technology. He should be extremely helpful with research — and perhaps could help provide some advances in combating cancer.
In fact, Watson has the potential to help many industries as well. He’s already working for companies like Citigroup (NYSE:C) and WellPoint (NYSE:WLP).
As a result, it looks like IBM will cash in. CLSA analyst Ed Maguire estimates Watson alone will bring in $2.65 billion in revenues for Big Blue, or 52 cents of earnings per share, by 2015.
