Google Chrome Bumps Internet Explorer as Top Browser

After 14 years, IE loses the No. 1 spot, while Opera takes the lead in mobile

The browser wars have been heating up lately. Over the past year, Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Chrome has grown over 300% — and now it looks as if it’s the No. 1 player, beating out Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Internet Explorer. IE had held the top spot for about 14 years.

According to StatCounter, Chrome had a market share of 32.43% in May, versus IE’s 32.12%.

One key to Chrome’s growth has been its popularity with consumer Internet users. But IE still has a strong hold on businesses.

For mobile, Opera has the top spot, at 21.9% of the market. Interestingly enough, there are rumors that Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) may buy the company to bolster its mobile efforts.
