World’s 10 Most Respected Companies

Barron’s[1] once again asked professional money managers to rank the world’s 100 largest companies in terms of respect.  Survey participants considered leadership, business strategies, ethical business practices, economic performance and product innovation when scoring each company. Rating options included: highly respect, respect, respect somewhat, or don’t respect.

Here are the 10 companies that topped this year’s list of the 100 most respected companies.

  1. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[2])
  2. IBM (NYSE:IBM[3])
  3. McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD[4])
  4. (NASDAQ:AMZN[5])
  5. Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT[6])
  6. 3M (NYSE:MMM[7])
  7. United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS[8])
  8. Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO[9])
  9. Nestlé (PINK:NSRGY[10])
  10. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC[11])

There are a few companies that ranked lower this year than they did in previous surveys due to either questionable judgement calls, sales slumps and major gaffes.

Warren Buffet’s political stance was probably responsible for Berkshire Hathaway‘s (NYSE:BRK.A[12],BRK.B[13]) fall from No. 3 to No. 15.

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM[14]), Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT[15]), Pepsico (NYSE:PEP[16]), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG[17]), Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG[18]), Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC[19]) and Toyota (NYSE:TM[20]) are a few more companies that ranked lower than they did on last year’s survey.
