American Airlines’ 5 Potential Merger Partners

Struggling American Airlines is looking for a merger partner. The airline’s parent company, AMR (PINK:AAMRQ), says it’s considering strategic options as it works through its bankruptcy, Reuters notes.

Among the candidates cited for a potential merger are JetBlue (NASDAQ:JBLU), US Airways (NYSE:LCC), Alaska Air Group (NYSE:ALK), Virgin America and Republic Airways’ (NASDAQ:RJET) Frontier Airlines, according to unnamed sources.

Beyond airlines, AMR could end up being purchased by a private equity firm or potentially by a international airline.

The company has raised the prospect of a merger with its unsecured creditors during bankruptcy negotiations over its debt.

Rumors of possible merger suitors for American Airlines surfaced earlier this year. Analysts say that finding the right merger partner is the best chance for the airline to return to profitability.
