Amazon Brings the Kindle to Schools

Bulk discounts and special software are available for educators

In an attempt to undercut the competition, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is making an aggressive effort to enter the school market with its Kindle tablet. The online retailer is using several approaches to undercut rival Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) success in sales to students and educators.

After testing Kindles at hundreds of schools, Amazon is offering bulk discounts for schools and showing off its Whispercast service, reports Reuters. The new service allows educators to set up accounts for students, group them into classes or grades, and make assignments and tasks available. It also allows teachers to place limits on the use of the devices such as by blocking social media sites.

While Amazon has offered bulk discounts on the hardware for schools, it’s not yet offering the same on e-books and other digital products. Amazon says such discounts are under consideration for the future.

The program is one facet of Amazon’s effort to place Kindles into more hands over time. With CEO Jeff Bezos’ admission earlier this month that the retailer makes no money on the device itself, Amazon is looking to expand its installed base to promote sales of products and media through the device.
