Pizza Hut Backs Out of Debate Stunt

The pizza maker changes its tune under pressure

After getting much attention and a certain amount of ribbing, Pizza Hut (NYSE:YUM) is abandoning plans to reward anyone at Tuesday’s town hall-style presidential debate who asks the candidates if they prefer pepperoni or sausage.

The marketing stunt did get plenty of publicity, reports the Los Angeles Times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the kind the executives at Pizza Hut wanted. The company was roundly mocked for interfering with the electoral process.

Pizza Hut has changed the terms of the contest to allow those interested to vote online for which they prefer. One winner will be chosen to receive the prize, one large pizza pie per week for 30 years, or a one-time sum of $15,600.

It remains to be seen whether any attendee at the debate will ask the question anyway.
