Booking your air travel 21 days in advance is the best way to save money on airfare, a new survey says.

Making your plans three weeks ahead can save the average domestic consumer $28 over earlier booking, reports the Los Angeles Times[1]. Average domestic airfare booked six months ahead was $370, while that same fare fell to $342 by 21 days before takeoff.

An study by Airline Reporting Corp. in January found that the best time to buy is six weeks in advance of your travel.

But don’t wait too long: Both studies agree that prices go up significantly if you book less than seven days in advance. That can increase costs by up to 30% or more.
