Is AT&T Allowing All Subscribers to Use FaceTime?

Apple iPhone 4S[1]Reports from mobile device users suggest that AT&T (NYSE:T[2]) may have changed its position on cellular FaceTime use again[3].

The wireless carrier initially didn’t allow use of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL[4]) video-chatting application over its cellular networks, restricting users who wanted to use the app to WiFi connections only, SlashGear notes.

AT&T later opened FaceTime use to cellular customers, but only those with its high-end shared-data plans.

After complaints from consumer groups and customers, AT&T announced earlier this month that it would expand FaceTime use to other cellular customers[5], namely those with tiered data plans and 4G/LTE devices, including the iPhone 5 and latest-generation iPads.

Now, AT&T has apparently opened up FaceTime use to customers on all data plans, using a broader range of Apple devices. Users with grandfathered unlimited data plans and older iPhone models report that they can use FaceTime over cellular connections.

AT&T has not confirmed any change to its FaceTime plans, which could mean users with older devices and grandfathered plans have been mistakenly been granted FaceTime access. Additionally, not all customers with tiered-data plans report being able to use FaceTime just yet.

FaceTime calling hasn’t been subject to restrictions by Sprint (NYSE:S) or Verizon (NYSE:VZ).
