Angry Birds Movie Set to Hit Theaters in …

Studio hires 'Despicable Me' producer for film adaptation

Angry Birds, the mobile game that took the world by storm three years ago, is now set to be a movie.

In the wake of the Angry Birds craze, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the movie is under development. Slated for release in the summer of 2016, game developer Rovio says the film will be shot in 3D, The Guardian reports.

Hired to produce the movie is John Cohen, whose previous credits include Despicable Me and Hop. He’s also done work on Ice Age, Robots and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who. Hired as Executive Producer is David Maisel, another Hollywood veteran who was once chair of Marvel Studios.

To bridge the time until the movie’s release, Rovio will be digitally releasing 52 cartoons using the characters from Angry Birds. The film will be produced by Rovio’s newly acquired Finnish animation studio, Kombo.

As of October 2012, Angry Birds had been downloaded more than 1 billion times, according to Rovio.
